Catfish is the "king" of Nigeria aquaculture in terms of the quality produced and total value. This Nigerian delicacy is raised in earthen or concrete ponds filled with fresh water and fed grain-based diet. Catfish has a mild flavor and is high in protein and low in calories.
In order to ensure that we have the best quality product for farmers who depend on us to stock their ponds, and end customers that need a quality product from us, we have divided our fish farm into 3 (three) sections.
- The Broodstock Section
- The hatchery Section
- The Grow-out Section
- The Fish Dry Section
The Broodstock Section:
As a prudent catfish fingerling producer we initiate our own selective breeding program, this is generally accomplished by choosing the fastest-growing fingerlings for future brood stock. Fingerlings are selected based on their potential for further growth and breeding, this practice assures that an adequate number of the best females and males are selected because of their proportionate growth rate. Particular attention is paid to their feeding and water, we therefore develop diets or supplements specifically designed to meet the requirements of catfish broodstock to optimize spawning performance and ensure the production of high-quality eggs and fry.
Our research in catfish has just begun to yield data sufficient to support detailed economic analysis of broodstock and hatchery performance and management practices. We do our best to ensure that the broodstock we use for production is of high quality, they are fed with the best quality organic feed to make sure their egg and seamen is of high quality, this grades Lehae Farm on top as the best quality juvenile producer.
The Hatchery Section:
To ensure effective hatching of juveniles that will grow to the desirable size and body weight, which will make our customers happy and give them the result they desire, it all starts in our hatchery where specialized attention is given to all the process and procedures that goes into hatching quality fishes for our customers, we consider prevention as the first line of defense when managing egg disease and survival.
Simple management strategies, such as disinfecting the hatchery before the hatchery season, having separate nets and equipment for each hatching trough, disinfecting hands, disinfecting egg masses before bringing them into the hatchery, and using a pathogen-free water supply, helps prevent the introduction of infectious pathogens into the hatchery. Our goal for a good hatchery management program centers on prevention of disease and to provide the optimal environment for embryo development and survival.
The Grow-out Section
The science of nurturing catfish in a controlled environment, which is called aquaculture is a great way to produce one of the tastiest and highest-quality catfish, for us we call it A WAY OF LIFE, we demonstrate this by ensuring we produce catfish of Standard Sizes, Fingerlings and Juveniles in large quantity to meet market demand.
At our farm we do not sell fries or fingerlings, we only sell juvenile of 8grams and above, the reason for this is because our fishes are hatched and grow with passion, we do not want to sell them to our customers and they die in the process of them stocking them or the difference in their environment or water affects it and it drops or die. Juvenile of 8gram and above has the best surviving rate, and does well when stocked by the customer.
Maintaining good water quality in production ponds is absolutely essential. Failure to do so will result, at best, good growth and high feed conversions or at worst, a total loss of all fishes in the pond. We realize that fishes in the pond are living in their own wastes. Thus, the weight of fish that can be produced in a pond is limited by the ability of that pond to provide adequate oxygen, not only to keep the fish alive but to enable them to metabolize their food and grow, and to break down nitrogenous wastes.
Oxygen plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy fish pond environment, fishes need oxygen to breathe and water rich with oxygen allows efficient biological filtration. A stable pond environment with clean and clear water depends on oxygen.
